The possession of a knife is illegal and punishable by a $10,000 fine.
Background information (if available):
Don’t worry – firearms, slingshots, throwing stars, and just about anything you could conceive of are illegal in Australia. Kind of ruins the old image of Crocodile Dundee or “tough” Australians, doesn’t it?
Rumor has it the labour party is considering dull spoons for banning in 2012.

i don’t think the fine is as high as $10,000. i’m certain it’s at least a $1000 on-the-spot fine.

It is legal to carry knives if they serve a professional purpose. I.e. a chef can transport knives to or from work. There are countless jobs that require items with pointy sharp edges.
Actually when going hiking, camping, hunting, fishing and/or doing sport activities that require knives, you are also allowed to have a knife on you.
Boyscouts are allowed to carry knives.
Long story short, if you have a GOOD REASON, you can carry a knife.
Also, Singhs are allowed to carry knives.

It is illegal to carry a knife in a public area in the state of Victoria.
Even if It’s for your profession or recreational activitys. (clearly the law was made by city folk that clearly have no idea)
It is still perfectly legal to own a knife of any size however.

It’s illegal, if concealed on your person in public or carried for malicious intent.
