It was against the law to knit during the fishing season on the isle of Jersey (channel islands Europe)as all the hands were needed for the cod season. Knitting was the second industry on the island and garnments (Jerseys)made there were reaching premium price in the UK and continent. I doubt that “New Jersey” had the same law.
