Atheists are disqualified from holding office or testifying as witness.

Arkansas Constitution Article 19 Section 1 states that no person who denies the being of a God shall hold any office in the civil departments of this State, nor be competent to testify as a witness in any Court.

Should be repealed due to 1st amendment.

  • Gaerett

This is unacceptable. America is founded on freedom of religion, and non-religion should get just as much respect.

Nice going, you wrinkly old redneck prunes. Go hold your damn book in the air while you do everything it says not to.

  • vielle

So if you aren’t aware of a religion you have no authority? When I was born I wasn’t even aware of christianity or religion what so ever!

  • Elle

How is this a stupid law? One cannot be considered trustworthy if they cannot themselves believe in God and His truth.

  • M.

Elle: You’re stupid for two reasons:

    1) It only disqualifies atheists. It doesn’t exempt people of other creeds that don’t believe in a christian god (Hinduism, Shinto, etc.), so your perquisite about having to believe in god is moot.

    2) It shows to a lesser extent that you’re one of those people that would claim that the bible would keep you moral as if people would go about committing murders if they didn’t have the threat of eternal damnation by some invisible man in the sky.

tl;dr: Yes, this is a stupid law.

  • shepd

Wow Elle! I had no idea you were a satanist too! Praise and offer tidings to our mutual Lord God and Saviour, Beelzebub!

  • Alff

How’s that working for you, Arkansas?

  • Trevor Handermann

Kinda makes some sense because they are swearing the oaths on the bible. If you don’t believe in a god, then those oaths are void.

  • Logical

Um, Trevor, forcing people to swear on the bible before testifying is a violation of the constitution.
